While the Conference itself is an enjoyable intellectual and collegial experience, the more prosaic considerations, such as where to eat is sometimes a chancy proposition, especially if one can only take so many days of eating hamburgers, surviving on bar food or don't want to burn through the food budget in the first two days (In Atlanta I survived almost exclusively on the bananas and bagels served at lunch time after the sticker shock at the end of the first day.)
There's also the situation of being non-functional without a cup of coffee and standing in line with 50 colleagues all worrying about whether the session they absolutely have to go to has already started (San Diego was particularly notable for that, and I was present for the rather sad experience of seeing a well-heeled but sleepy-looking morning presenter becoming increasingly frantic about the leisurely pace of the coffee line and then finally having to dash away in a rather undignified manner two people before she got to the front. The saving distraction that kept the situation from breaking into a riot that morning was the natural civility of behavior analysts, but also the amusing narrative analysis of the situation from the business end by someone from OBM).
Generally by close to the end of the five days, it gets sorted out by word-of-mouth, I finally stumble on to the cheap place I wished I had found the first day, and then it's time to go home.
With that in mind, I decided to do some detective work ahead of time, and share it with anyone else who might find it useful.
The relatively nearby Copper Square has a rather nice website and kindly provides a nifty interactive map which shows the different amenities in the area around the Phoenix Convention Center--restaurants, ATMs, shuttle and bus lines, etc..
